On December 13, 2024, an International Conference themed “Mapping the World in Lexicography: on the 50th Anniversary of Diwan Lughat al-Turk” was held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, organized by the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation. The event was attended by high-level officials, UNESCO representatives, diplomats, and renowned scholars in Turkology, linguistics, and ethnography.

TURKPA Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er, delivering the opening speech, emphasized the global historical and cultural significance of Mahmud Kashgari’s masterpiece. He noted that Diwan Lughat al-Turk documented the spirit and lifestyle of Turkic societies, bridging cultures through its use of Arabic, the scholarly lingua franca of the medieval Islamic world.

The conference included the presentation of the new Russian translation of Diwan Lughat al-Turk and the unveiling of the first Latin-script manuscript found in Azerbaijan after 86 years. Scientific sessions focused on the work’s translations and its role in connecting communities and generations.
