Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated in a recent interview on Kossuth Radio that “Hungarians speak honestly and directly,” which often makes their voice in the EU stand out. He referred to French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks about the EU needing to improve competitiveness, calling Macron a key figure in building a strong Europe. Orbán noted that, during their discussions, they also addressed Hungary’s upcoming role in hosting the European Political Community summit, remarking, “The Western world meets in Budapest.”
He stressed that while the EU’s economic competitiveness lags behind, Hungary must adopt an economic model uniquely suited to its culture and needs. “We should adopt what is good from both the East and the West,” he said, adding that Hungary’s approach to policy is one of “economic neutrality.” Orbán emphasized that this tailored model would foster Hungarian talent and create a system where citizens “feel good and perform their best.”
On international and domestic issues, Orbán criticized Brussels, stating that Hungary’s independent stance is unwelcome among EU elites, as they prefer a “puppet government.” He also mentioned that if former President Trump returns to office, the ongoing war could cease, which would allow Hungary to avoid adopting extreme economic policies imposed by Brussels. Highlighting the importance of Hungary’s National Consultation, Orbán said it reinforces government policy through direct public support, especially on critical issues like migration, where Hungary stands firm against the EU’s migration pact.
