On March 27, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with a European Union delegation led by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas. The discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation and enhancing strategic partnerships between Uzbekistan and the EU.
At the beginning of the meeting, Kaja Kallas conveyed greetings from European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. She emphasized the EU’s commitment to deepening relations with Uzbekistan.
A key topic of discussion was the upcoming “Central Asia – EU Summit,” scheduled for April 3-4 in Samarkand. Both parties recognized the significance of the recent multilateral ministerial meeting held in Ashgabat in preparation for the summit.
Economic collaboration was at the forefront of the agenda, particularly in trade, logistics, and transport, including the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. Digitalization, green energy, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure modernization were also key focus areas.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the need to enhance cooperation between Uzbekistan and EU institutions. Discussions included the finalization of a new “Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement” and Uzbekistan’s aspirations to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides exchanged views on pressing international and regional issues, emphasizing the importance of coordination in security, stability, and sustainable development.
