On February 4-5, 2025, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Malaysia at the invitation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The visit marked the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing innovation, trade, and cultural exchange.
Uzbekistan and Malaysia share historical and cultural ties based on mutual benefit and shared values. In recent years, bilateral relations have strengthened, with political dialogue, economic cooperation, and joint ventures expanding significantly.
High-Level Meetings and Strategic Agreements
During the official reception at the Perdana Putra complex in Kuala Lumpur, President Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister Ibrahim held high-level discussions, covering key areas of cooperation.
🔹 Trade and Investment
- A Preferential Trade Agreement will be developed to facilitate increased trade volumes.
- The creation of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Tashkent under the management of a leading Malaysian company.
- Joint industrial exhibitions and business forums will be held.
🔹 Innovation and Technology
- Uzbekistan and Malaysia will focus on electronics, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and smart cities.
- Malaysia will support Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
🔹 Energy and Sustainability
- Cooperation in petrochemicals, hydrogen production, and green energy will be expanded.
- Geological exploration and carbon capture technology development will be prioritized.
🔹 Education and Culture
- A bilateral agreement on higher education cooperation was signed.
- Mutual Weeks of Culture will be held in both countries in 2025-2026.

Business and Economic Collaboration
A Uzbek-Malaysian Business Forum was held in Kuala Lumpur, attended by over 200 business leaders from both countries, including Petronas, Proton, YTL Corporation, EXIM Bank, and many others.
Mirziyoyev invited Malaysian investors to participate in Uzbekistan’s privatization programs in telecommunications, energy, and banking sectors.
The visit concluded with a meeting at the Petronas Twin Towers, where discussions focused on geological exploration, carbon capture technologies, and workforce development at Petronas University.
With the strategic roadmap now in place, Uzbekistan and Malaysia are set to strengthen their partnership through innovation and sustainable development.
