The World Crafts Council has approved the designation of Turkistan, Kazakhstan, as a “World Crafts City.” The announcement follows a visit in February by council members and regional experts from India, Turkey, and Southeast Asia, including the WCC Asia-Pacific Vice President.
During the visit, experts met with Turkistan Region Governor Azimbek Pazylbekuly and were introduced to the city’s cultural heritage and craftsmanship. The mayor formally submitted the city’s application to be recognized with the honorary title.
Following thorough evaluations and presentations to the organization’s member states, the Council confirmed that Turkistan met the criteria to receive the international status. The official certification was delivered on March 26, 2025.
According to local authorities, this new status will bring added support for artisans, including financial assistance covering 25% of their costs. Plans are also underway to establish a dedicated Craftsmen’s Center in the near future.
