The global impact of Turkish TV dramas has reached academia, with Northwestern University in Qatar now offering a course titled Global Turkish TV Drama. With a massive global audience in nearly 170 countries, Turkish dramas are making Türkiye a leading force in cultural exports, ranking third in the industry after the US and the UK.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Turkish dramas attract around 700 million viewers worldwide, making them an influential tool for cultural diplomacy. Yasemin Y. Celikkol, who teaches the course, stated that this widespread appeal showcases the strength of Turkish dramas in connecting with international audiences, prompting her to create a course around the phenomenon.

The course invites students to examine the motivations behind these shows’ appeal, the socio-political dynamics in their production, and their diverse reception across cultures. Through academic readings and global research, students explore how Turkish series serve as a form of soft power and even fill specific gaps in global media markets.

Celikkol explained that Turkish dramas resonate with viewers in the Middle East, Balkans, and Central Asia, where historical and cultural ties strengthen their appeal. Popular shows such as Gumus (Noor), Binbir Gece (The Thousand and One Nights), and Fatmagul’un Sucu Ne? (What is Fatmagul’s Fault?) have captivated audiences in these regions, while Muhtesem Yüzyil (The Magnificent Century) has expanded their reach in Africa.

Beyond entertainment, Turkish dramas play a role in shaping perceptions of Türkiye, promoting a positive image of Muslim culture, and stimulating economic interest. Shows like Dirilis Ertugrul (Resurrection: Ertugrul) portray Muslim characters with dignity and strength, countering stereotypes and empowering viewers in regions such as Pakistan and among Uyghur communities. Celikkol noted that Turkish series drive increased tourism and interest in Turkish culture, with viewers exploring filming sites and learning the language to connect with the stories.
