Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced a historic agreement between Turkey and Turkmenistan for natural gas supply. Under this deal, Turkey will import 1.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Turkmenistan by the end of this year.
The gas will be delivered through a swap arrangement via Iran, with Turkey receiving the gas at the Iran-Turkey connection point in Gürbulak. Minister Bayraktar emphasized that this step is part of Turkey’s strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce gas costs for consumers.
Looking ahead, Turkey plans to not only increase its imports from Turkmenistan but also act as a transit hub to transport Turkmen gas to Europe. However, the lack of a Caspian Sea pipeline remains a significant obstacle.
By the end of this year, Turkey aims to finalize the supply of 1.3 billion cubic meters, which is expected to enhance energy security and competitiveness.
