TRNC Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu conducted an official visit to London from March 3 to 7, 2025, where he engaged in a series of diplomatic meetings and discussions.
During his visit, Ertuğruloğlu met with members of the UK Parliament’s TRNC Friendship Group and lawmakers from different political parties at the UK Parliament. He also attended roundtable discussions at think tanks, where he provided insights into the Cyprus issue. Additionally, he gave several media interviews, including live broadcasts, to various news outlets.
Accompanying the foreign minister on his visit were Director General of the Foreign Affairs Department Gizem Alpman, TRNC London Representative Çimen Keskin, Promotion Department Director Bahar Öztay, Political Affairs Director of the Foreign Affairs Department Aysan Mullahasan Atılgan, and staff from the TRNC London Representation.
Statements to Reuters and LBC
As part of his London engagements, Ertuğruloğlu gave an interview to Reuters, where he expressed skepticism about the upcoming UN-led informal talks in Geneva on March 17-18, stating that the meeting was unlikely to yield meaningful results.
“Without a common ground, what can be expected from this meeting in Geneva?” he questioned.
He added that the Greek Cypriots viewed the meeting as an opportunity to resume negotiations from where they left off in 2017, while for the TRNC, it was an occasion to reaffirm their stance: two separate, sovereign, and equal states.
“Why Insist on a Failed Formula?”
Ertuğruloğlu reiterated his doubts about the negotiations, arguing that a partnership with the Greek Cypriots was not feasible.
“There is no prospect of forming a partnership with the Greek Cypriots, so why persist? Why insist on a formula that has already failed? This is our question to the United Nations. Without a common ground, what can be expected from this meeting in Geneva?” he stated.
