Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), one of Türkiye’s leading defense and aviation companies, was the target of a terror attack on Wednesday at its facility in the Kahramankazan district of Ankara. Despite the attack, TAI continues to play a critical role in strengthening Türkiye’s defense capabilities and reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers with its ongoing projects. Established in 1973, TAI has been instrumental in the design, production, and modernization of aircraft, both for domestic use and for export.

TAI’s projects include major air platforms like the T129 ATAK Attack and Tactical Reconnaissance Helicopter, the T70 General Purpose Helicopter, and unmanned aerial vehicles such as ANKA and AKSUNGUR. These platforms are already in use by Türkiye’s security forces, providing vital support. The company is also gearing up to introduce the HURKUS Basic Trainer Aircraft, HURJET Trainer and Light Attack Aircraft, and the GOKBEY General Purpose Helicopter into service, while tests for the unmanned combat aircraft ANKA III are underway.

One of TAI’s most ambitious projects is the KAAN National Combat Aircraft, which marks a significant milestone in Türkiye’s aviation history. KAAN will place Türkiye among a select group of nations capable of producing fifth-generation fighter jets, bolstering the country’s independence in defense. The aircraft is expected to enter the Turkish Air Force’s inventory by 2028, representing a major step toward reducing foreign dependency. TAI’s influence is not limited to Türkiye; the company also recently modernized Azerbaijan’s Su-25 aircraft, showcasing its global reach and expertise.
