The opposition Syrian National Army (SNA) has liberated Tishrin Dam, a crucial facility for eastern Syria’s electricity and water supply, from PKK/YPG terrorist occupation as part of Operation Dawn of Freedom, according to local sources.
The Tishrin Dam, located south of Manbij on the Euphrates River, is the largest and most strategic dam recaptured so far. About 70% of Syria’s electricity needs are supplied by the Tishrin, Tabqa, and Baath dams.
The dam was seized by the PKK/YPG terrorist group with US support in December 2015, becoming the first point occupied west of the Euphrates. The US established a base at the site in January 2016.
Since the ouster of the Assad regime, the PKK/YPG has sought to exploit Syria’s instability and create a terrorist corridor along the Turkish border. Türkiye has actively worked with allies like the SNA to counter these efforts, ensuring local safety and border security.
The PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths during its decades-long campaign. The YPG, its Syrian offshoot, continues to pursue territorial control in the region.
