Climate change is impacting countries across all continents, but developing small island states are particularly vulnerable to its effects. These global challenges negatively affect people’s livelihoods and hinder progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Azerbaijan is no exception. Each year, we observe lower water levels in our rivers and a drop in the Caspian Sea’s levels. Azerbaijan is also facing water scarcity.

As reported by APA, these remarks were made by President Ilham Aliyev in his address to participants of the COP-preparatory event held in Baku.

The head of state further noted, “Azerbaijan is taking bold steps to overcome these challenges. We are successfully implementing our national priority of ‘clean environment and green development’ at the socio-economic level. Azerbaijan has declared 2024 the ‘Year of Solidarity for a Green World.’

Our rich wind and solar energy potential enables us to advance the renewable energy agenda. The liberated regions of Karabakh and East Zangezur, declared ‘green energy zones,’ have significant renewable energy resources.”
