Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed Hungary’s stance as a conservative force within the largely liberal European Union, emphasizing that his government focuses on family support rather than immigration to address demographic issues. Speaking to ServusTV, he explained that countries like Germany and Austria rely on immigration policies to tackle declining birth rates, whereas Hungary prioritizes supporting young families and creating a family-friendly culture. “The more we respect life, the more children there will be,” he stated.
Orbán warned of serious economic challenges, noting that Europe’s competitiveness is diminishing. He cited concerns raised by other EU leaders, such as the warnings from French President Emmanuel Macron and former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi about Europe losing global markets and the need to revitalize its economy. “Europe’s economic foundation needs a complete overhaul,” he emphasized, especially in terms of energy policy, where EU companies face far higher electricity and gas prices than those in the U.S.
Addressing immigration, Orbán stressed Hungary’s strict policies, noting that Hungary has limited the entry of foreign culture, mainly Islamic communities, unlike other European countries. He added that Hungary only issues work permits for foreigners as needed, with the expectation that they leave upon expiration.
On EU politics, Orbán underscored the need for more patriotic leaders, expressing hope that other countries like Austria and France might soon elect conservative governments, which would promote a more balanced EU approach. He also expressed alignment with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s views on immigration and peace, saying, “We need a peace-promoting president over a war-promoting one.”
