Based on a decree from the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a 240 km stretch of the A380 “Guzar-Bukhara-Nukus-Beyneu” highway in Karakalpakstan has been reconstructed, creating a new link to European markets via the Caspian and Black Sea ports. At a briefing, Nilufer Jumayeva, head of the Information Service of the Road Committee, highlighted that the $383.4 million project received $274.9 million in loans from the Asian Development Bank. Turkish company Polatyol Yapı and Azerbaijan’s North West Construction were responsible for constructing the first half, while the remaining 120 km were built by Chinese firms. The project is expected to increase the road’s capacity, reduce maintenance costs, and improve road safety. With the new road, international transport distances within Uzbekistan will decrease by up to 1,000 km, lowering transport costs by 25%. Additionally, more than 200 trade and industrial facilities will be developed along the route, generating about 7,000 new jobs. The road is projected to increase transit and trade services in the Karakalpakstan region by $200 million annually, with exports expected to rise by $300 million.
