Russia’s tightening of migration laws has raised concerns in Kyrgyzstan. Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev emphasized that the restrictions should not apply to Kyrgyz citizens due to the country’s membership in the EAEU, which offers privileges for labor migrants.

However, recent reports indicate an increase in entry denials for Kyrgyz nationals and stricter document checks at Russian borders. Prolonged inspections, especially at airports, are creating difficulties for migrants.

Russian Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Sergey Vakunov highlighted that labor migration is a crucial issue for both nations. Kyrgyz workers in Russia send approximately $2.5 billion annually, while Russia relies on their labor force.

The enhanced border controls are a response to increased terrorist threats. Vakunov noted that both countries are working collaboratively to address these challenges through awareness campaigns.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s need for migrants to drive economic growth, while stressing the importance of combating illegal migration to maintain order.
