Amid ongoing geopolitical instability and economic challenges, Kazakhstan is strengthening its cooperation with partners within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This region holds strategic significance for Kazakhstan’s foreign economic activities, accounting for approximately 25% of the country’s total trade turnover. Macroeconomic indicators from the first half of 2024 show stable positive dynamics across CIS countries, with GDP growth at 4.7%, capital investments increasing by 11.2%, and retail trade turnover rising by 8.6%. These figures underline the importance of the CIS as a platform for economic integration.

In October 2024, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed several initiatives during the CIS Heads of State Summit in Moscow aimed at deepening economic cooperation. He emphasized the importance of industrial collaboration, simplifying customs procedures, and creating efficient logistics chains. Additionally, he proposed an annual “Commonwealth Fair” to bring together producers and artisans from CIS countries, with the first event suggested to be held in Taraz, a city with a rich historical legacy.

Transport infrastructure development plays a crucial role in these efforts. Kazakhstan is actively advancing projects such as the Trans-Caspian route and the “North-South” corridor, which link Europe and Asia. These initiatives reinforce Kazakhstan’s position as a key logistical hub in the region. With over $35 billion in investments, the country has significantly modernized its transit corridors, boosting freight turnover and enhancing regional connectivity.

Cooperation with Russia remains another vital aspect. Kazakhstan is a major trade partner for several Russian regions. Cross-border trade accounts for approximately 70% of bilateral turnover, highlighting the significance of integration within the CIS framework. By promoting its initiatives and fostering deeper regional cooperation, Kazakhstan continues to play a pivotal role in advancing economic ties across the region.
