Kazakhstan is continuing preparations for the construction of its first nuclear power plant (NPP). The Interdepartmental Commission for the Development of the Atomic Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan has reviewed proposals from potential reactor technology suppliers for the first NPP. According to the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, the proposals of four leading global companies have been shortlisted.

The companies under consideration include China’s CNNC (HPR-1000 reactor), Russia’s Rosatom (VVER-1200 reactor), South Korea’s KHNP (APR-1000 and APR-1400 reactors), and France’s EDF (EPR1200 reactor).

The commission is reviewing the proposals based on technological solutions, safety systems, financing conditions, and environmental aspects. This is a crucial step in selecting the appropriate technology for Kazakhstan’s first NPP, with the process set to continue in the near future. The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the final decision will be made considering all factors and in the interests of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

It was also revealed that the location for the first NPP in Kazakhstan has been decided, though the exact site has not been disclosed yet.
