This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness and Alliance in the 21st Century between Kazakhstan and Russia. Signed in 2013, the treaty laid the foundation for comprehensive bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, from trade and industry to energy and education.

Platform for Dialogue
The treaty has become a significant tool for developing trust-based allied relations between the two nations. Despite global geopolitical challenges, the partnership remains resilient. Regular meetings between leaders, such as the bilateral talks in November 2023 and participation in the SCO summit in 2024, highlight the importance of this alliance.

The annual Kazakhstan-Russia Interregional Cooperation Forum further strengthens ties by addressing practical issues like trade, transport, and regional development. In 2023, Kostanay hosted discussions on agriculture, resulting in agreements on social security, mutual recognition of academic degrees, and new transit routes. The 20th Forum in 2024 will explore bilateral relations within Eurasian integration frameworks.

Energy and Resources
Energy remains a cornerstone of the alliance. Projects like joint oil exploration in the Caspian Sea and collaborative infrastructure initiatives highlight the strategic importance of this sector. In 2023, agreements between KazMunayGas and Lukoil set the stage for new ventures.

Trade and Investment
Trade between the nations reached $19.5 billion in 2024, with significant investments fostering economic integration. Over 140 joint projects, including ventures in machinery, metallurgy, and chemistry, have created thousands of jobs, reflecting the alliance’s mutual benefits.

Education and Culture
Educational cooperation has flourished with Russian university branches opening in Kazakhstan. The partnership extends to cultural initiatives such as mutual cultural days, cinema events, and cross-border artistic collaborations.

Tourism and Infrastructure
Visa-free travel has facilitated mutual tourism, with Kazakhstan ranking among Russia’s top travel destinations. Infrastructure modernization agreements signed in 2024 promise enhanced transport connectivity.

The Treaty on Good-Neighborliness and Alliance continues to foster a robust partnership, ensuring sustainable development and regional stability.
