Kazakhstan and Russia are exploring the possibility of resuming passenger rail services between the two countries. According to “Kazinform,” citing Russian media, Russian Railways (RZD) confirmed after a meeting of the CIS Railway Transport Council that they are assessing the feasibility of re-establishing passenger train routes from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to Moscow. RZD President Oleg Belozerov announced that discussions are underway regarding new schedules for passenger trains from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to Moscow, a move that could significantly enhance regional connectivity.
Belozerov also emphasized the importance of expanding routes within the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Using the eastern route, Russian Railways, in collaboration with Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, is working on developing a regular container transport service, boosting trade and logistics efficiency across these nations.
In addition, Kazakhstan has announced plans to complete a new railway line to China by 2027, which is expected to further strengthen the region’s transit potential and open up new opportunities for both passenger and freight transport.
