A group of travelers from the UK’s “Piki Reels” club, led by Belgian national Yves Bouvien, continued their journey through Azerbaijan’s liberated regions, reaching Shusha after their visit to Fuzuli. Upon arrival in the central square of Shusha, the group observed the bullet-ridden statues of Natavan, Bulbul, and Uzeyir Hajibeyli, iconic Azerbaijani cultural figures. They were briefed on the city’s history, the devastation endured during its occupation, and the extensive restoration projects underway. The travelers learned that Shusha’s historic buildings, mosques, and monuments suffered severe vandalism during the nearly 30-year occupation. Since its liberation, a comprehensive reconstruction effort has been launched to restore Shusha’s cultural heritage.
During their visit, the group explored notable landmarks, including Khurshidbanu Natavan’s house, the Khan’s spring, fortress walls, and the old Shusha prison. They then visited the scenic Jidir Duzu plain, marveling at the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This tour is part of an initiative aimed at promoting “black tourism” and showcasing both the cultural heritage and the significant reconstruction work in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories.
The journey through Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur marks the 12th such visit by international travel clubs to the region since 2020, with prior tours bringing over 400 renowned travelers from 50 countries. The Piki Reels club’s visit underscores the global interest in these areas, emphasizing the importance of heritage preservation and the positive impacts of ongoing restoration work.
