Kyrgyzstan marked the 100th anniversary of national journalism during the “Meikin” award ceremony held at the Kyrgyz National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after A. Maldybaev. President Sadyr Japarov delivered a speech expressing gratitude to media representatives for their contribution to the country’s development, the strengthening of democratic values, and shaping public consciousness.
“The pursuit of objective reporting is an integral part of building the new Kyrgyz Republic,” the president stated, underlining the role of journalists in countering disinformation and shaping public opinion.
The “Meikin” award, spanning 10 categories, aims to support professionalism and accountability in journalism. Each category offers a prize fund of 1 million soms, serving as a significant incentive for creative growth and skill enhancement.
President Japarov also addressed the topic of freedom of speech, emphasizing that it should not be confused with spreading rumors and unreliable information. He urged journalists to verify facts and ensure their materials meet a proven standard. “Your work is the eyes, ears, and voice of the people,” Japarov highlighted.
Special attention was given to strategic projects such as “Kambar-Ata-1” and the “China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan” railway, which define the country’s future. The president noted that journalists play a key role in covering these initiatives and creating transparency in the fight against corruption.
Concluding his speech, Japarov congratulated the first laureates of the “Meikin” award and expressed hope that their success would inspire all of Kyrgyz journalism.
