On November 5, 2024, the National Historical Museum of the Kyrgyz Republic in Bishkek inaugurated a significant exhibition marking the 950th anniversary of the renowned Diwan Lughat al-Turk (Compendium of Turkic Dialects), written by Mahmud al-Kashgari in the 11th century. This monumental work is not only a lexicographical collection but also a comprehensive record of the languages, cultures, and traditions of the Turkic peoples, providing a rare insight into the heritage and cultural richness of the medieval Turkic world.
The exhibition’s opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including the First Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan, Chyngyz Esengul uulu, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aybek Moldogaziev, and President of the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Aktoty Raimkulova. In his remarks, Chyngyz Esengul uulu emphasized that al-Kashgari’s Diwan serves as an unparalleled source for understanding the linguistic and cultural diversity of Turkic nations. He expressed his gratitude to the organizers for their dedication to preserving and promoting cultural roots, underscoring the exhibition’s role in fostering a deeper appreciation of Kyrgyz heritage.
President of the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, Aktoty Raimkulova, highlighted the significance of cultural cooperation in preserving and promoting historical heritage. She noted that Diwan Lughat al-Turk symbolizes the interconnectedness of Turkic peoples and reflects their contribution to the global cultural legacy. Raimkulova stated that the Foundation actively supports initiatives aimed at showcasing exceptional works that contribute to the unity of Turkic communities and foster respect for their shared heritage.
The exhibition, open to the public until December 15, offers visitors a chance to view rare artifacts, including original copies of al-Kashgari’s work, traditional clothing, and other cultural artifacts from the Turkic medieval period. Through these displays, visitors are invited to explore the significant contributions of the Turkic civilization to world history and culture, providing a unique perspective on the shared heritage that connects Central Asian nations.
