According to APA news, a proposed amendment to the “Service and Civilian Weapons” law was brought up for discussion during today’s session of the National Assembly. Under current legislation, Azerbaijani citizens aged 18 and over are permitted to obtain civilian weapons—with the exception of firearms. The new draft law, however, stipulates that while citizens aged 18 may continue to acquire non-firearm weapons, only those who have reached the age of 21 will be granted the right to purchase private firearms.
The amendment was approved in its first reading by a vote. This legislative change represents a notable evolution in Azerbaijan’s arms control policy, as it raises the age requirement for obtaining private firearms. Proponents argue that this measure will contribute to enhanced public safety, while critics believe it may prompt further debate on civil rights and regulation. The law is expected to undergo additional reviews in subsequent sessions.
