The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11-22 November 2024. This major event will include the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29), the 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP19), and the 6th session of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA6). These sessions will focus on finalizing the first enhanced transparency framework and setting the new collective quantified goal on climate finance.

The Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA61) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI61) will also convene, discussing scientific and implementation strategies to achieve global climate goals. The Azerbaijani COP29 Presidency, along with the COP28 Presidency (UAE) and COP30 Presidency (Brazil), have outlined a ‘Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C.’ This plan aims to significantly enhance international cooperation to ensure the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aligns with keeping global warming within 1.5°C.

In March 2024, the Presidencies Troika sent a letter to global parties, highlighting their commitment to holding a series of high-level political meetings. These meetings will assess the barriers to NDC development and explore how financial support can ensure fair climate transitions. High-profile gatherings, such as the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Germany and sessions at the UN General Assembly, will be part of this process. The goal is to strengthen the global climate response by bringing together key international political platforms like the G20.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, who will serve as COP29 President, has laid out his vision for the conference. His presidency will focus on two main pillars: enhancing climate ambition and enabling practical action. Babayev’s theme for the conference, “In Solidarity for a Green World,” reflects Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing climate action. The letter from Babayev detailed key events and thematic days leading up to COP29, emphasizing how these initiatives will push global climate efforts forward.
