Azerbaijan’s selection as host of COP29, one of the most important global conferences on climate change, reflects the country’s active role in environmental initiatives. According to Sevinc Fətəliyeva, a member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis and the COP29 Organizing Committee, this hosting role brings a unique opportunity to rally international focus on climate challenges and green energy projects. Azerbaijan has recently announced plans to promote Karabakh and East Zangazur as green energy zones, which Fətəliyeva says represents the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The upcoming COP29 also provides Azerbaijan with a platform to strengthen relationships with key international green energy stakeholders and financial organizations. However, Fətəliyeva has expressed concerns about certain Western countries’ alleged attempts to undermine Azerbaijan’s hosting role, suggesting that it could be a diversion from their own climate responsibilities. “Many of the major climate polluters are in the West, and such attempts to cast doubt on Azerbaijan’s intentions distract from essential issues,” she stated.

Fətəliyeva anticipates that COP29 will focus heavily on climate financing, with particular emphasis on Western commitments to the global climate effort. According to her, attracting investment from international financial hubs is vital for Azerbaijan’s transition to greener energy. Fətəliyeva adds that financial cooperation is essential in scaling up green projects, and she hopes COP29 will serve as a bridge for increased foreign investment in Azerbaijan’s renewable energy sector.
