Moldovan prosecutors have requested a 30-day preventive arrest for Evgeniya Gutsul, the leader of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. She was detained at Chișinău International Airport and is accused of financial fraud, illegal funding, and false declarations.
Evgeniya Gutsul was elected as the head of Gagauzia in 2023 with strong public support. She has been a vocal advocate for the region’s autonomy and has worked on strengthening ties with Turkey. Her arrest has sparked mass protests, with many seeing it as an attack on Gagauzia’s self-governance.
After her detention, Gagauz people took to the streets of Comrat, chanting “Freedom for Evgeniya Gutsul!” and “Hands Off Gagauzia!” The protesters argue that the Moldovan government is systematically restricting the rights of the Gagauz people and using legal pressure to weaken their autonomy.
Gagauzia gained its autonomous status in 1994 following tensions between the region and the central government. However, conflicts between Chișinău and Comrat have continued over the years. Turkey has historically supported Gagauzia, and this latest development is expected to attract international attention, particularly from Ankara.
As tensions rise, many wonder: Is this arrest a legitimate legal action, or is it a politically motivated move to suppress Gagauzia’s aspirations for self-rule? If Moldovan authorities continue pressuring the region, the situation could escalate into a larger political crisis.
