Today, the heads of foreign affairs ministries from Central Asian states and the European Union gathered at the “Ýyldyz” Hotel in Ashgabat for a crucial diplomatic meeting. Participants included foreign ministers from Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, alongside the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas.
The primary focus of the discussions was the upcoming “EU – Central Asia Summit”, set to take place in Samarkand on April 3-4. The summit is expected to significantly enhance political, economic, and environmental cooperation between the two regions.
Key topics included climate change, transport corridors, energy partnerships, and digital transformation. Special attention was given to the establishment of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor Coordination Platform, scheduled for October 2024 in Ashgabat. This initiative aims to attract investments in railway, road, and port infrastructure, strengthening connectivity between Europe and Central Asia.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of Turkmenistan’s neutrality policy and its role in promoting peace and international cooperation. In the context of the UN-declared “International Year of Peace and Trust,” participants highlighted the significance of mutual engagement in sustainable development.
Moreover, discussions covered EU’s “Global Gateway” strategy, which focuses on advancing digitalization, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability. The necessity of cultural and humanitarian exchanges was also underscored.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants signed the Joint Communiqué of the 20th EU-Central Asia Ministerial Meeting, reaffirming their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation.
